DESCRIPTION

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound for The Lower Extremity is a 2 day, 95% hands-on-training course. In this course, you will master the 5 P’s system of MSK US assessment to confidently identify normal anatomy to facilitate clinical decision-making.  MSK ultrasound utilizes a hand-held unit to obtain the  images around the Hip {anterior hip} Hip Joint, Psoas, {lateral hip} greater trochanter, gluteus minimus, medius, maximimus, greater trochanter bursa {posterior hip} Piriformis, sciatic nerve, SI joint; Knee joint {anterior knee} suprapatellar bursa/quadriceps tendon, femoral trochlea, infrapatellar bursae, patella tendon {lateral knee} Lateral collateral ligament, Lateral meniscus, It band {medial knee} medial collateral ligament, medial meniscus, pes anserine {posterior knee} biceps femoris, popliteal fossa; Foot/Ankle {anterior ankle } anterior joint capsule, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallicus longus, tibialis anterior {lateral ankle} anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneal, fibular ligament, tibio-fibular ligament, peroneus longus and brevis  {medial ankle}  tarsal tunnel, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, tibial nerve, {posterior ankle} achilles tendon, soleus, {plantar foot} plantar plate, plantar fascia.  These images will be demonstrated and obtained in both long axis and short axis.  At the conclusion of the course you will be able to accurately label, interpret and provide visual feedback to your patients and referral sources demonstrating the anatomical condition of the soft tissue structures.

[Prerequisite-No prior Ultrasound training or experience is required to attend]

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for The Lower Extremity is to obtain knowledge and clinical skills necessary to visualize joints and associated muscles and tendons by obtaining good imaging  and educating your patients on the findings. MSK US allows you to efficiently make treatment decisions or referrals to an appropriate knowledgeable provider.  This 16 -hour applied-learning course combines live demonstrations and practical hands-on labs. Students participate in small groups of 2 or 3 to practice achieving reliable and reproducible images, which will be evaluated by the instructor with individual feedback provided.   Supervised lab sessions are performed to effectively get the best image of targeted structure possible, identify structures in the image and be able to describe and label the image from the bone up to the skin.

Aren't Ultrasound Machines Expensive?

Many people ask about Dr. Coppola’s recommendations purchasing ultrasound units. There are ultrasound units for every budget, understand that price and quality can go hand and hand.

  • Butterfly iQ+:  This unit can be purchased for $2,000 to $3,000, with payment programs where you can get the unit for as low as $68 per month. The Butterfly unit shows needles well under the ultrasound.
  • Clarius L7: this is the best buy/affordable option. It cost $4900.00 with payments as low as $99.00 a month.  This unit gives a nice quality image and visualization of anatomic structures and is the unit that will be used during the course.
  • Sonosite Edge: Non-handheld / portable option.  These units are quite expensive, but give a great image and are real work horses.  Prices range from $20,000 to $40,000.
